Google Ads cost for small business in France (2026)
Google Ads cost for small business means two separate bills: what you pay Google for clicks, and what you pay the person who runs your campaigns. French sources in 2026 put the first at roughly 300 to 2,500 € a month and the second at 300 to 1,500 €. This article explains both, gives real numbers, and helps you decide if Google Ads is worth it for you.
Two bills, not one
Most people ask “how much does Google Ads cost?” and get a confusing answer that mixes two things.
- The ad budget. You pay Google for every click on your ad. You set the daily or monthly limit. This money goes to Google, not to the person managing your account.
- The management fee. A freelancer or agency builds the campaign, chooses keywords, writes ads, watches results, and reports to you. You pay them for this work.
Always ask for both numbers separately. A quote that gives only one hides half the real cost.
What one click costs
You pay per click. The price is set by an auction between everyone who wants to show up for the same search. It depends on your trade, your town, and the quality of your ads and page.
French sources give a wide range. One 2026 price guide says the average is 1 to 3 € a click, with a locksmith paying 5 to 15 € and a photographer 0.50 to 2 €. Another 2026 guide gives an average of 2.67 € across all sectors, from 0.30 € for food e-commerce to 25 € for a Paris divorce lawyer. It also notes that click prices rose about 13 % in 2025.
A more concrete picture comes from real campaigns run by a French agency in western France, counted on 16 September 2026: 0.87 € a click for landscaping, 1 to 1.5 € for clearance work, 1.91 € for tiling and painting and 2.15 € for painting and renovation. These are local trades in small areas of the Loire region and nearby, so a busy area on the Côte d’Azur may cost more. Your own account will tell you the real figure after a few weeks.
What budget to start with
Google sets no minimum, but a budget that is too small gives you too few clicks to learn from. French sources suggest these starting points for the ad budget alone:
| Situation | Monthly ad budget |
|---|---|
| Simple local campaign (tradesman, local shop) | 300 to 500 € |
| Regional service business | 800 to 1,500 € |
| Online shop selling across France | 1,500 to 5,000 € |
These figures come from a French freelance guide (2026). Another agency, MyWebo, suggests 400 to 1,500 € a month for search campaigns. A third source, Alliance Technique, suggests 500 to 2,500 € for a small or medium business that wants visible results. The sources don’t agree exactly, which is normal: the right number depends on how competitive your trade is.
What a freelancer or agency charges
The same sources give the management fee:
- Freelancer: 500 to 1,500 € a month before VAT for a small or medium business, according to one guide. Another guide says 300 to 1,200 €.
- Agency: 15 to 20 % of the ad budget, or a fixed fee of 250 to 500 € a month.
- Fixed fee or percentage? The fixed fee is more predictable. Below about 3,000 € of ad budget a month, it’s usually the better deal. A percentage can favour the provider if your budget grows but the work stays the same.
A worked example, with its assumptions
Say you run a local service and set an ad budget of 400 € a month. If a click costs 2 €, you get about 200 visitors. Now, suppose one visitor in twenty sends a request for a quote. That would be 10 requests, or 40 € per request.
This is an illustration, not a forecast: the 2 € and the one-in-twenty are just assumptions. The point is to show you can calculate your own numbers once you have a few weeks of data. If a request is worth more to you than the cost per request, the campaign pays. If not, the problem is usually the page the ad leads to or the keywords, not the budget.
When Google Ads is not the first thing to do
One French consultant says it plainly: if your total monthly budget, fees and ads together, is under about 1,000 €, Google Ads may not be the priority. A well-built SEO strategy can be more profitable over time. That is good advice. For a local business, a correct Google Maps listing and a clear website often come first. Ads work best on a site that already explains your offer and has an easy-to-find form or phone number.
What to check before you hire someone
- The Google Ads account is yours, in your name. You can see everything in it.
- You pay the ad budget directly to Google.
- Forms, phone clicks and messages are tracked from day one. Otherwise, nobody can tell what the money brought.
- You get a short monthly report in plain words: spend, requests, cost per request, and next steps.
- Nobody promises a number of leads or a position. Results depend on your trade, your area, and your page.
How we work at Castel Studio
We are a studio in Nice run by its founder, and we set up campaigns personally. A Google Ads launch starts from 490 €, and monthly management from 390 € a month, which is at the low end of the freelance ranges above. Tracking is part of the launch, and an ad needs a good landing page: ours start from 490 € for a single page. You always pay the ad budget directly to Google. We do not charge VAT (micro-business status, art. 293 B of the French tax code) and we do not promise leads.
If you want to know if Google Ads makes sense for your trade and town, describe your business in a few lines. We will answer in writing within 48 hours, including an honest “not yet” when that’s the right answer.
Questions
What is the minimum Google Ads budget for a small business?
Google sets no minimum, so you can start with a few euros a day. In practice French sources suggest 300 to 500 € a month of ad budget for a simple local campaign and 800 to 1,500 € for a regional service business. Below that you get too few clicks to learn anything.
Do I pay Google or the person who manages my campaign?
Both, separately. You pay Google for the clicks, directly from your own Google Ads account. You pay the freelancer or agency for the work. Never let anyone put your ad budget through their own account without telling you.
How much does one click cost in France?
It depends on the trade. Several French sources give an average of about 1 to 3 € a click. Very competitive trades, such as locksmiths or lawyers, can pay 5 to 15 € or more, while a photographer may pay 0.50 to 2 €. Your own account will show your real figure after the first weeks.
Is Google Ads better than SEO for a small business?
They do different jobs. Ads bring visitors as soon as the campaign runs and stop when you stop paying. SEO and a good Google Maps listing take months but keep working. If your total monthly budget is under about 1,000 €, one French consultant advises looking at SEO first.
